SubieFest – it’s an all out Subaru extravaganza that was on October 10th this year, in Rosamond, California. Each year it gets more and more impressive, and this year it was no disappointment. Eric Hsu, of Beyond the Dyno (now MotoIQ), attended this year and caught a few interesting pictures to show of some pretty quick and unique Subarus. Last Saturday I made it up to Subiefest to check out the Subaru world. These days I don’t have much time to make it out to all the events so usually need to double up on reasons to justify going.  Since Ben is in town from the UK and we are working on the  ECPro ECU for the EVO X, I figured it would be a great opportunity to check out the Suby scene and do some data logging on the way. Ben has a genuine interest in Subies coming from his past job at Prodrive as a WRC head engine development engineer so he wanted to check out the US Suby scene as well.

Oh, Japan. When will you cease to put out tons of funny stuff that people overseas just can’t seem to understand. What’s a Kei truck? It’s basically a mini truck, like a Kei car is a mini car, except they’re trucks, you know with a bed and stuff. Often found in 4×4 configuration, they’re useful for the farmers that need to have a cheap and reliable form of transporting goods around on bad terrain, like in the mountains. Too bad they found their way into the hands of drift enthusiests, now they’re being used as drift machines. “Keitora”, as everyone calls them here, is a contraction of “kei jidousha torakku”, which is the Japanese word for “compact car” combined with the Japanese pronunciation of “truck”. These little workhorses are a familiar sight in the agricultural areas outside major cities, and are usually seen being driven by old farmers with a load of fresh produce in the back. They are also commonly used by workmen like carpenters and builders, which seems to be the sort of jobs the guys who drift these cars have. I’ve heard that Team Burst’s Naoki Nakamura, who works as a landscaper, drifts his keitora every day in the mountains for practice.

If there ever was a definition of “ghetto backyard tuning” this would be it. Brazing over a BBQ flame? Punching big holes by drilling lots of little ones? Venting A/C coolant to the atmosphere? A couple months ago I saw the reddevil and Skidd build threads (congrats on the recent success Skidd!) and after sleeping on it that night, I couldn’t think about anything other than how I was gonna do my car next I was gonna go with a Raptor system, but after learning they weren’t ready for my model year, I decided to just make one myself.

SeoulfulRacing has a handful of a Genesis coupe on display, this time a supercharged 3.8L V6 with 430RWHP. Thats more than most entry level sports cars! Combined with the excellent chassis, it should yield a boatload of fun on the road and on the track. They also hint that a kit may be available soon over in the states, so keep your eyes peeled! One of our customer just had his SC set up done @ our shop
dynoed at 430rwhp using 0.5 bar (about 8psi) pulley.

0-60 in in 2.8 seconds, quarter mile in 10.87…and launch control was off! Some incredible work by the people over ay Hennessey Performance – they modded their R35 GT-R with new ECU programming, new turbochargers and a host of other great of other supporting mods to rebuild their GT-R as a fire breathing monster. The latest creation to come from the Texas tuner is the GTR700 based on the Nissan GT-R. The upgraded Godzilla now sports 715 horsepower and 662 lb-ft torque thanks to numerous modifications including a stainless steel exhaust system, new ECU programming, modified turbos with larger compressor wheels, 100mm cold air intake, high-flow fuel injectors, transmission cooler, clutch pack upgrades, and more.

Beyond Redline has taken apart the exhaust manifold and turbocharger assembly from the 2.0T Genesis Coupe. No surprises here, a typical log manifold with a rather small TD04-based Mitsubishi turbocharger. Click here to see this thread on GenCoupe Forums. They have also fabbed up their prototype bar and plate aftermarket intercooler upgrade for the 2.0T Genesis Coupe. They say that it is the largest core you can fit in the front end without structural modifications – and with a great high quality core this provides at least a 20hp improvement over similar aftermarket intercoolers. I don’t know where this build orginated from (Sources say Autz in Korea, but I can’t find anything about them) but I’m seeing threads for it made on a bunch of websites like GenCoupe and LowMotion - what we have here is another member with the V6 model with an aftermarket turbo bolted on. This particular one has a rebuilt engine with forged internals to be able to make a very healthy 504PS (496HP) to the wheels. Eric Hsu at Beyond The Dyno shares this Specialty-Z built 300ZX Twin Turbo build on his website with a few thoughts of his own. This 300ZX is a monster, with twin GT3071 turbochargers, a wealth of supporting parts, and a good tune. The results are well over 1000HP at the wheels, a true sleeper because from the outside, it looks almost stock. Click here for the full description!

I’d love to have a Z32 one of these days. I still have fond memories of the Z32 even though I haven’t driven one in a long while. Back in the day when I was 20 (circa 1993), Jeff the Tokyo Pimp and I did several Z32 NA and TTs with 150 shots of direct port nitrous. Those were my first experiences with involuntary lane changes and smoking tires at 80mph.

Forced Air Technologies has a few pictures of their compound charged Subaru WRX STi and Subaru Baja XT. Compound charged, as in both turbocharged, and supercharged.
