More information about this strange little Subaru\Toyota love child emerges – it seems as if the companies are playing with two different body styles. Both look great, but lets see some commitment before you get us all excited! It is supposed to be powered by a Subaru EJ20 engine in a RWD configuration – it should be a boatload of fun.

Japan automotive magazine Best Car has printed more information on the upcoming 086A Toyota Subaru FR sports car which is bound to get people speculating. Apparently two different body styles have been seen being tested, both on the new Subaru Legacy platform. Best Car doesn’t go into any detail about what the two coupes looked like, suffice to say that both the Toyota and Subaru models will have different body work which goes against what was previously reported.

Looks like Nissan isn’t going to let people get away with buying a reletively inexpensive exotic that can outperform more expensive exotics that easily. Particularly worrying is this statement:

Adding, replacing, reprogramming, attempting to reprogram, altering or disconnecting any  computer, control unit, or electronic module or deleting any or all stored information in any computer, control unit, or electronic module, or denying access to any data or information stored in any computer, control unit, or electronic module VOIDS ALL COVERAGE under the 2010 Nissan GT-R New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

I’m not sure how this adds up in conjunction with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act – but it is certantly something to pay attention to if you’re in the market for a R35 GT-R.

Edmunds recently felt the pain recently as they brought their GT-R in for scheduled maintenance, which involves:

• Transmission fluid flush
• Differential fluid change
• Engine oil change
• Engine oil filter
• Engine and cabin air filter

The transmission fluid comes in at a whopping $86.24 per quart, and the differential oil comes in at $62.02 per quart. Add that to $817.50′s worth of labor, put your car in the shop for 4 days, and you end up with a tab for a little over $2000. Ouch. Check out the article from Edmunds here.

Last week we took our Nissan GT-R to Nissan of Santa Monica for routine service. We knew going in that this was going to be an expensive one. We’d been warned ahead of time that this service was not only an oil change (already expensive on these cars), but also a routine change of the differential and transaxle fluids.

Update 20090402: Some smart people in NAGTROC are posting up their findings at chemically analyzing the GT-R’s gear oil…and their experiences with developing their own.

It seems in an attempt to get the Nissan GT-R to appeal to a wider audience, they will be developing and selling a “softer” version of the R35 GT-R. The linked article here, on PistonHeads mentions something called “Ripple control”, along with more choices in interior like wood grain in the proposed Spec-M model.

The GT-R Spec-V firm suspension will get replaced by a softer, more refined setup and will include ripple control shock absorbers to help iron out the bumps. There’ll also be a wider choice of interior trims to help entice a more upmarket clientele, with aluminium and wood grain finishes both options on the new Spec-M.

Great news for forced induction enthusiests – BMW has reveiled that turbocharged M lineups are likely in the (not so) far future. To comply with upcoming stricter emissions standards, big V8 and V10 engines aren’t going to cut it anymore so the shift is to go to smaller, turbocharged motors. More details here, at MotorTrend. Its about time, considering the success of the *35 twin turbo trim.

Along with everybody else, BMW faces strict, new U.S. Corporate Average Fuel Economy and European Union CO2 standards, and must power lighter cars with more fuel-efficient engines. A turbo-six will replace the M3′s 400-horsepower, 4.0L V-8 and a 300-plus-horsepower turbo four will rocket a 1 Series M (just don’t call it an M1).

As of 3pm this afternoon we picked up our first Genesis 2.0T Track coupe. Our special projects technician Ivan Phipps just signed the paperwork. We drove it right to the shop and started our long but detailed analysis of what needs to be done.

1. The exhaust is pretty bottlenecked as we expected…big room for improvement there
2. There is CAVERNOUS room for an AMS Turbo kit so see that in the very near future
3. IC pipe and an intake should be able to be worked up very quickly
4. The tuners here are already on the case for re mapping the ECU
5. Looks to be a returnless fuel system so we will have to fix that.
6. Speed density for air metering so a vent to atmosphere BOV should work without a hitch on the car

We tested a bone stock Genesis Coupe 2.0T on MD Automotive’s Dynojet chassis dyno located in Westminster, CA. Hyundai says its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generates 210 hp and 223 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel, and like most factory ratings for turbo cars, those numbers are a bit on the conservative side.
