Over-Boost

SubieFest – it’s an all out Subaru extravaganza that was on October 10th this year, in Rosamond, California. Each year it gets more and more impressive, and this year it was no disappointment. Eric Hsu, of Beyond the Dyno (now MotoIQ), attended this year and caught a few interesting pictures to show of some pretty quick and unique Subarus. Last Saturday I made it up to Subiefest to check out the Subaru world. These days I don’t have much time to make it out to all the events so usually need to double up on reasons to justify going.  Since Ben is in town from the UK and we are working on the  ECPro ECU for the EVO X, I figured it would be a great opportunity to check out the Suby scene and do some data logging on the way. Ben has a genuine interest in Subies coming from his past job at Prodrive as a WRC head engine development engineer so he wanted to check out the US Suby scene as well.

JCviggen from GenMay just finished up another phase in his turbo Volvo 850 T5-R, fresh in is a new Garrett GT2871R and shiny new conrods. With the boost turned down to 20psi he was able to hammer out a lap around the ‘Ring in just a hair over 8 minutes. Check this link for the thread on GenMay, and watch below for the video!

The first meetup of the weekly RKC Houston meet. I couldn’t stay too long; but the photos that I was able to take are here. Small meet in the beginning, as most people showed up and left. The crowd changed significantly as the hours wore on, so there was a nice spread of cars. However, since I was only able to stay for a 20 minute window, I wasn’t able to see everything.

A smattering of Subarus, a few Evo’s and a boosted S2k all met up at Underground Graphics in Houston to do some early Saturday meeting, greeting, and drinking. Some true beasts were on show, such as the hot Forester XT, a supercharged Honda S2000, and two smoking Lancer Evolutions. Keith from AWDTuning.com did a few road tunes, and Mike from Dent Wizard was on hand to work his magic with some truely incredible results. Great people all around, and some great cars to be seen. Oh, Japan. When will you cease to put out tons of funny stuff that people overseas just can’t seem to understand. What’s a Kei truck? It’s basically a mini truck, like a Kei car is a mini car, except they’re trucks, you know with a bed and stuff. Often found in 4×4 configuration, they’re useful for the farmers that need to have a cheap and reliable form of transporting goods around on bad terrain, like in the mountains. Too bad they found their way into the hands of drift enthusiests, now they’re being used as drift machines. “Keitora”, as everyone calls them here, is a contraction of “kei jidousha torakku”, which is the Japanese word for “compact car” combined with the Japanese pronunciation of “truck”. These little workhorses are a familiar sight in the agricultural areas outside major cities, and are usually seen being driven by old farmers with a load of fresh produce in the back. They are also commonly used by workmen like carpenters and builders, which seems to be the sort of jobs the guys who drift these cars have. I’ve heard that Team Burst’s Naoki Nakamura, who works as a landscaper, drifts his keitora every day in the mountains for practice.

A couple months ago I saw the reddevil and Skidd build threads (congrats on the recent success Skidd!) and after sleeping on it that night, I couldn’t think about anything other than how I was gonna do my car next I was gonna go with a Raptor system, but after learning they weren’t ready for my model year, I decided to just make one myself.

SeoulfulRacing has a handful of a Genesis coupe on display, this time a supercharged 3.8L V6 with 430RWHP. Thats more than most entry level sports cars! Combined with the excellent chassis, it should yield a boatload of fun on the road and on the track. They also hint that a kit may be available soon over in the states, so keep your eyes peeled! I’m wondering what they’re using for engine management and fueling, as they seem pretty tight lipped about the deal. Click “Read more” to see the pictures and video that we mirrored here. More information about this strange little Subaru\Toyota love child emerges – it seems as if the companies are playing with two different body styles. Both look great, but lets see some commitment before you get us all excited! It is supposed to be powered by a Subaru EJ20 engine in a RWD configuration – it should be a boatload of fun.

Japan automotive magazine Best Car has printed more information on the upcoming 086A Toyota Subaru FR sports car which is bound to get people speculating. Apparently two different body styles have been seen being tested, both on the new Subaru Legacy platform. Best Car doesn’t go into any detail about what the two coupes looked like, suffice to say that both the Toyota and Subaru models will have different body work which goes against what was previously reported.
